How to Reduce Your Risk of Being Involved in a Wintertime Car Accident

On Behalf of | Jan 10, 2020 | Personal Injury

Driving in Iowa in the winter can be sketchy at times. When visibility is impaired and road conditions are poor due to snow and ice, though, the risk of being in a crash is even greater. The risk of being involved in a crash is also exacerbated during the holidays, when more people are on the road. As you drive this winter, here are some tips for reducing your risk of being involved in a crash

Start with Preparing Your Vehicle

One of the first things that you should do before driving in wintry conditions is to ensure that your vehicle is up to the task. This includes making sure your tires are ready (don’t drive without snow tires, chains, or four-wheel drive if conditions are bad), checking your antifreeze levels, installing new wiper blades and topping off wiper fluid, and filling up your tank of gas.

Drive With Caution

The best tip for avoiding an accident when the weather outside is poor is to avoid driving altogether if you can help it. If you can’t help it, and being on the road when it’s icy or snowing is inevitable, then be sure to drive with extra caution. This means:

  • Increasing your following distance. Stopping will take longer and visibility may be impaired if it’s icy out. Provide more distance between your vehicle and the vehicle in front of you than you normally would.
  • Slowing your speed. Slow your speed to account for the reduced amount of traction your vehicle will have if you are driving on snow or ice.
  • Know how to handle ice. If roads are slippery, it’s important that you know your vehicle’s brakes. Remember to not brake suddenly, but instead to apply slow, constant pressure to the pedal. If you have to travel uphill, don’t just power through – doing so will just cause you to spin out. Instead, remember to move slowly and steadily, and to not stop!
  • Reduce distractions. It’s never safe to drive while distracted, and even less so when driving conditions are poor. Put your cellphone away and commit to keeping your eyes on the road.

Know Your Route and Check the Weather

When you leave the house in the morning, be sure to check the weather so you know what to expect. We also recommend checking the local news to learn whether or not any accidents or closures have been reported on your normal route. By the time you get in your vehicle, you should know which route you plan to take – this way, you won’t be flustered if you have to make a route change due to being unprepared later on. What’s more, give yourself more time to get to your destination, and considering leaving earlier than you normally would as a way to avoid traffic.
